Moving towards Net Zero Carbon: energy and carbon saving tips on campus

The university wants to encourage all staff and students to help save energy on campus as we move towards our Net Zero Carbon goal for 2023.

There are plenty of ways we can support reducing our energy usage on campus. To help, we have created some simple guidance – please do as much as you can when you are on campus.

Talk to your team to identify more areas that may be specific to your work. Helping to save energy helps us move towards our Net Zero Carbon goal for 2023.

Heating:

  • Keep the heat in to stay warmer. Close doors and windows (unless health restrictions are in place) and report draughts via the Portal (log a facilities request, under Estates and Facilities on the ‘Staff Services Tab’)
  • Ensure radiators and heating grilles are not covered or obstructed
  • Wear clothing appropriate to the weather
  • Avoid sitting in a sedentary position for extensive periods
  • If you have your own office and aren’t going to be on campus for a while, turn down your room thermostat to the frost setting before you leave
  • Avoid using supplementary heaters (unless you have permission to use one)
  • Follow guidance in the Heating and Cooling Policy.

Other tips:

  • Switch off lights if it is bright enough outside or you are the last person leaving a room
  • If you use energy intensive equipment, consider how you can save energy in its operation without impacting the work it does
  • If you have PCs in your office that are not needed, check with IT to have these decommissioned
  • Teach staff to power down projectors after sessions (follow lectern guidance)
  • Use the stairs rather than the lift
  • Turn off your monitor, switch off chargers and other equipment that does not need to be powered
  • If you have responsibility for buying electrical equipment, ensure this has very high energy efficiency ratings
  • If boiling the kettle, only boil what you need
  • Report examples of energy wastage to your campus FM team.

And don’t forget other responsible actions you can do to improve sustainability at Greenwich: maximise your recycling and avoid contaminating it, buy less (reuse more), save water, consider more sustainable meal choices in our outlets, remember to use your reusable water bottle, enjoy our green spaces, become a Sustainability Champion. More sustainability ideas can be found here.
