Developing a Critical Care Unit at Avery Hill campus

We are pleased to have been awarded funding from the Office for Students to develop a Critical Care Unit (CCU) alongside our existing simulation facilities.

An example of how our CCU will look, the image shows an empty critical care facility with a person pulling a blue curtain across the space, in the distance are theatre doorsWe already have an excellent simulation centre providing facilities and resources for healthcare students, enabling them to learn how to deliver outstanding patient care, and we are developing this further with the addition of a Critical Care Unit.

Critical care in both physical and mental health is a crucial component of healthcare service provision, and the CCU will enable us to provide this and enhance our simulation centre.  It will provide increased opportunity for simulated practice through innovative modes of study, and for continued professional development, specifically critical care skill acquisition for the clinical workforce.

Professor Derek Moore, Pro Vice-Chancellor in FEHHS said:

Over the last two years during the pandemic people have become acutely aware of the important role that critical care plays. We are really pleased to be able to add this important CCU facility on our campus at Avery Hill as another part of our extensive health care simulation facilities.

We have been making significant investment in new world leading simulation facilities that provide close-to-real-life experiences of working in hospital wards and in other health care settings. This new facility adds to this by adding the capacity to simulate operating theatres and critical ward environments. These facilities allow us to train our students in the realistic environments they will experience within hospitals and to simulate a variety of live scenarios they may encounter. This will make for better trained students and allow us to deliver high-level continuing professional development training to NHS staff to improve their skills across their working life.

Work on the project is already underway, and is expected to complete in the summer of 2022.  We will keep you informed but in the meantime if you have any questions please contact Charles Everard, Clinical Skills/Technical Learning Resources Manager.
