Greenwich academic appointed to board of public body overseeing safety at sports grounds

Professor Aoife Hunt MBE will join the Sports Ground Safety Authority board for three years from 12 May 2025 to 11 May 2028

The board oversees the Sports Ground Safety Authority (SGSA) which is the safety regulator for Premier League, EFL and international football grounds in England and Wales and the UK Government’s independent advisor on sports ground safety.

The SGSA provides independent, expert advice based on over three decades of working to help ensure watching football in England and Wales is a safe and enjoyable experience for fans.

Set up after the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, its purpose is to ensure sports grounds are safe for everyone. It develops guidance including the Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds and carries out a range of statutory functions in relation to football in England and Wales and advisory functions in relation to other sports both within the UK and internationally.

Prof Hunt said:

“I am delighted to have been appointed to the SGSA Board.  I am passionate about crowd safety and the vital work that SGSA does in the UK and internationally.

“With my experience in crowd safety, security, research, and guidance development – as well as my corporate board experience – I am eager to support the board in achieving its objectives and enhancing safety at sports grounds everywhere.”
