Introducing Learning Analytics to support our students’ learning

TLDRoffon

A new tab is available for Personal Tutors and Module Leaders in Data Explorer which collates information to prompt and inform conversations with students.

We have been working with Jisc on a new Learning Analytics tool, which uses data the university already collects to provide additional information to support students' learning. This presentation provides an introduction and overview to Learning Analytics.

The data, or 'digital footprints' left when students use our Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) combined with attendance monitoring and basic demographic information and programmes of study provide information that will support a more personalised student experience and the academic relationship by helping to identify students or groups of students that might benefit from particular interventions or information from staff.

The collection and use of the learning analytics data is governed by our university policy and we have clearly set out our purpose and principles on our webpages.

The information is available to Personal Tutors and Module Leaders through a new tab on Data Explorer, which contains live data for the 2018/19 academic session. You can find supporting information on using the tool, a tutor guide, FAQs and videos in the Resources section of the Learning Analytics web page.

The same information will be available to students through the Learning Analytics student app, Study Goal, developed by Jisc, from 6 November and we encourage Personal Tutors and Module Leaders to share the Data Explorer view with individual students, as part of our commitment to being open and transparent.

If you experience any technical issues accessing the Learning Analytics data please contact the IT Service Desk. Or if you have questions about Learning Analytics please look in the FAQs before contacting the Director of Student Experience in your faculty.
