Celebrating LGBT+ History Month in February

TLDRoffon

We’re celebrating the LGBT+ community by raising awareness and promoting equality. You can join the events happening at the university and in the wider community throughout the month.

LGBT+ Staff Community celebrating LGBT+ History Month and flag raising on campusLast year the LGBT+ Staff  Community co-wrote and launched a strategy to empower, raise understanding and celebrate the plural voices of our staff. This year's LGBT history month frames our activities under these three headings.

Throughout the month the community will be releasing articles that at first glance seem unconnected, in many ways they are but together they represent some of the plural work , voices and interests of the community. Ranging from inclusive work practices , through to the university consultation on conversion therapy and 'gay erasure' from literature, we aim to raise awareness of the issues still facing the community. We continue to add our contributions to celebrate, understand and empower a future free of discrimination, judgement and exclusion.

LGBT+ History Month is an annual celebration of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender history, with an emphasis on gay and civil rights. Since 1994, LGBT+ History Month aims to recognise LGBT+ rights and highlight diversity by making LGBT+ people more visible in the wider community.

It is an opportunity to raise awareness and educate ourselves about the prejudice faced by the LGBT+ community, and work towards making our university a safe space for everyone.

Equality, diversity and inclusivity are important to us at the university, and we are committed to a programme of action to challenge and overcome barriers to representation and inclusion. We recognise the importance of the LGBT+ Staff Community, LGBT+ allies and the wider community for promoting LGBT+ visibility and acting as agents of change at the university.

Show your support and get involved

Throughout LGBT+ History Month there will be events and articles to explore our three themes:

#celebrateLGBTplus

#understandLGBTplus

#empowerLGBTplus

This year the LGBT+ staff community are asking for donations to support the Albert Kennedy Trust for their work with LGBT young people aged 18-25.  If you would like to donate please visit our akt donation page.
