NSS 2017: Timetable and guidance for staff Articles

Last year more than 7 out of 10 final-year students completed the National Student Survey NSS, and around 40% of online respondents indicated that they were told about the survey by a lecturer or other member of staff.

That means you are often best placed to communicate the benefits and importance of the NSS, but your objectivity is crucial. 

You should communicate directly with students, but should set the NSS within a wider context of the student journey, explaining how we want to build community and dialogue with students and the role that the NSS plays in this. It's also good to explain how the results will be used by prospective students and how they will be or have been used to improve the student learning experience at Greenwich.

If you are talking to students about the NSS please ensure read the NSS Guidelines for Academic Staff and are clear on: 

  • Who is eligible to complete the survey
  • The importance of the NSS results
  • What the NSS is, why it is important and how the survey is administered
  • The guidelines relating to the promotion of the NSS
  • The rules regarding inappropriate influence

Week of 23 JanuaryThe survey launches this week (the second week of teaching), and is sent to students by Ipsos Mori in batches.  All communications about the start date of the survey must say 'week of 23 January'.
Tuesday 28 FebruaryEntries to the prize draw close.
Sunday 30 AprilThe survey closes.
July/AugustThe survey results are available (exact timings to be confirmed).

The Student's Union will also run Lecture Shout Out round 2 to provide 3rd year students with information on the support available to them in the run up to exams, campaign updates and the opening of the NSS survey as well as the importance of participating.  If you haven't already let Scarlett know when a good time to visit your lecture and students is, please get in touch with her.

What is the National Student Survey (NSS)?

The NSS is aimed at mainly final-year undergraduates and gathers opinions from students about their experience of their courses, asking them to provide honest feedback on what it has been like to study on their course at their institution.

It is an influential source of public information about higher education and gives students a powerful collective voice to help shape the future of their course and their university.

The NSS asks 27 questions, relating to eight aspects of the learning experience. Students are also given the opportunity to make positive and negative comments in an open answer question.

The NSS is a widely recognised authoritative survey. The results are made available to prospective students and their advisors through the Unistats website.  Both current students and prospective students benefit from the NSS as institutions use the information to help effect changes designed to improve the student experience, and more widely, the NSS provides information as part of the higher education quality assurance system.To find out more read the Q&A on the NSS site.
