Steven Haines, Professor of Public International Law at the University of Greenwich, has given evidence to the Parliamentary Committee on International Relations and Defence.

Steven Haines, Professor of Public International Law at the University of Greenwich, has given evidence to the Parliamentary Committee on International Relations and Defence.

The Committee is conducting an enquiry into the UK and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Professor Haines was one of three academic experts giving evidence at the House of Lords.

UNCLOS replaced the four 1958 Geneva Conventions concerning the territorial sea and the contiguous zone, the continental shelf, the high seas, fishing and conservation of living resources on the high seas.

The Committee asked about the development of UNCLOS, how it is enforced and the challenges it faces 40 years after its negotiation.
