Bradley likes to get stuck in and turn theory into practice. Luckily, he’s found a degree with plenty of opportunities to test out his learning in the real world.

Bradley Burnett is from Kent and is studying civil engineering at Medway Campus.

He applied to the university after he attended a campus taster day and really loved it.

Asked to name the best elements of his degree, Bradley focuses on the opportunities to get hands on. "The aspects I've enjoyed the practical sections, such as the laboratory work and site visits. I've found some of the lectures to be a little challenging at times, but plenty of work and revision solves that problem!"

He particularly enjoyed a summer placement, where he got to work on a highway project. "The placement was with Graham Construction in Chelmsford. I found out about them as they were exhibiting at one of the university job fairs. It was a fantastic experience and I learned an awful lot. It gave me a much-needed insight into how the construction industry works and how what I'd learned could be used in the real world."

He also praises university staff: "They're exceptionally friendly and helpful. They go above and beyond their roles to make your experience at the university a brilliant one."

Bradley is a lover of the outdoors. In his spare time, he enjoys climbing, cycling and hiking and hones his team-building skills as an assistant scout leader and archery instructor.

He's not halfway through his programme yet, so is still considering his career options. Teaching is a possibility, as this would give him the chance to draw on his experience as an instructor. Otherwise, a career in engineering beckons. True to form though, he wants to be outside rather than stuck in an office: "I'd like to work as a civil engineer on a construction site. I've always wanted to work alongside designers to create a building and to see it take shape. Work on a construction site would be perfect for this."

Bradley's ecstatic about his choice of university: "The University of Greenwich experience has been absolutely brilliant. It's been a fantastic ride so far, and I'm looking forward to the next couple of years."
