Eirini Vounatsou PhDc, MSc, BSc, FHEA

Senior Midwifery Lecturer

Eirini joined the University of Greenwich in May 2026 as a Senior Midwifery Lecturer in the School of Health Sciences. Prior to this role, she was working as a Senior Midwifery Lecturer for five years, where she also held the roles of Mental Health First Aider and UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) Project Lead for the Midwifery Programme.
Eirini is an IBCLC Lactation Consultant and holds an MSc in Midwifery, dual BSc degrees in Midwifery and Nursing, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education. She has extensive clinical and academic experience across both the UK and Greece and is additionally trained in tongue-tie division and hypnobirthing.
Eirini is an experienced midwife committed to delivering high standards of evidence-based, compassionate care to women, birthing people, infants, and families. She teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and has extensive experience leading and delivering modules in research, professional practice, infant feeding, public health, and maternity care. Her teaching philosophy centres on creating engaging, inclusive, and evidence-informed learning environments that support students' academic and professional development.

Eirini’s academic interests include infant feeding, human milk banking, human rights in childbirth, maternity care, public health, and midwifery education. She has a particular interest in research and evidence-based practice and is passionate about supporting students to develop critical inquiry skills and confidence in applying research to clinical practice.

Eirini’s research interests include breastfeeding, education, VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean), birth trauma, and human rights in childbirth. She is a part-time doctoral student and researcher, focusing on breastfeeding education within midwifery programmes across UK. Her MSc work led to the development of a VBAC scoring model to support informed decision-making and enhance maternity care outcomes.

Responsibilities within the university

  • Deliver teaching, assessment, and academic support across undergraduate pre-registration midwifery programmes, ensuring high-quality, evidence-based education aligned with professional and regulatory standards
  • Lead the undergraduate final research project/dissertation module
  • Lead and contribute to modules across the midwifery curriculum
  • Design and deliver lectures, seminars, workshops, simulation-based learning, and practical skills sessions for undergraduate midwifery students
  • Undertake marking, moderation, and assessment activities
  • Engage in research and scholarly activities that contribute to the advancement of midwifery education, maternal and infant health, and evidence-based maternity care. Disseminate findings through publications and conference presentations
  • Provide academic guidance, pastoral support, and professional development advice to students throughout their programme of study
  • Collaborate with NHS Trusts, practice learning partners, and clinical colleagues to support student learning and ensure the integration of theory and practice
  • Contribute to programme development, curriculum review, validation activities, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in applicant student recruitment activities, open days, and outreach events
  • Support the strategic development of midwifery education and promote interprofessional learning and collaboration across programmes.
  • Support student wellbeing, resilience, and inclusivity within higher education within my Mental Health First Aider role
    Integrate extensive clinical experience into teaching and learning activities
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with clinical partners, professional organisations, and maternity services to ensure teaching remains current, evidence-based, and responsive to workforce needs.
