Dr Nnedinma Umeokafor
Senior Lecturer in Built Environment
Nnedinma is a Senior Lecturer in Built Environment in the School of Engineering and Built Environment in this University. Prior to joining this institution, he was a Senior Lecturer in Quantity Surveying at the School of Civil Engineering and Built Environment, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Liverpool John Moores University. He has held academic positions in other higher education institutions in the UK, for example the University of Greenwich, University of East London and University College of Estate Management (UCEM) where he also sat in the school's Research Committee and Kingston University, London, United Kingdom where he was a Senior Lecturer in Construction Law and the Course Leader for all undergraduate BSc programmes (BSc Quantity Surveying Consultancy, BSc Building Surveying, and BSc Construction Management). He has also held various industrial and consultancy positions abroad and the UK, the most recent being a Health and Safety Manager.
He is qualified to doctoral level where his thesis examines complex regulatory systems in construction health and safety. Other academic qualifications include an MSc in Project Management, where his dissertation centres on sustainable behaviour, another MSc in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management where his dissertation focuses on digital technologies in infrastructure development, and the National Compliance and Risk Qualifications (NCRQ) and AIM Level 6 Diploma in Applied Health and Safety (Dip NCRQ) (equivalent to undergraduate degree level).
Nnedinma is research-active with over 65 research outputs including publications in leading reputable refereed built environment and safety, health and environment journals (e.g. Elsevier Safety Science), international conferences (e.g. International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB) W099), book chapters and reports. He is the first or sole author in at least 40 of them and the second in at least seven. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Construction Business and Management and a regular reviewer for 10 high-ranking international journals (e.g. Architectural Engineering and Design Management, International Journal of Construction Management, Construction Management and Economics, Elsevier Safety Science) and a number of international conferences such as the CIB W099 and W123. He is a Member of CIB W078 - Information Technology for Construction and a Member of CIB W099 - Safety, Health and Wellbeing in Construction.
Nnedinma has served and serves as an external examiner (for PhD, MSc research projects and academic programmes) in Universities in the UK and abroad, for example, the Universities of Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa; Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, South Africa; De Montfort University, United Kingdom; and Cardiff Metropolitan University, United Kingdom. Also, he has chaired PhD examination at Kingston University, United Kingdom. Nnedinma has reviewed for National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa. He serves as a member of the Local Organising Committee of the Construction Business and Project Management conference in South Africa and has served as Guest Editor for International Journal of Construction Management, the International Journal of Construction Supply Chain Management, and the Journal of Construction Business and Management.
Nnedinma is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and holds a chartered membership status with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) as a Chartered Construction Manager (MCIOB). He is also a Full Member of the Association for Project Management (APM) and was a Member of the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) and a Graduate Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). He is a Mentor for applicants who want to undergo CIOB chartered membership professional review. Working with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and IOSH Magazine, he engages with occupational safety, health and welfare professionals and others with interest in these areas through IOSH magazine articles. This magazine is read by more than 48,000 safety, health and welfare professionals globally. This provides him with the opportunity to stimulate discussions on burning issues and transfer knowledge. He has delivered CPDs to organisations. For example, recently, under the invitation of IOSH (global), he was part of a three-expert discussion panel in a webinar delivered to IOSH members globally and other occupational safety, health and welfare professionals around the world. An event that witnessed over 890 attendees. Other recent events where he has delivered talks include the 2nd African Research Universities Alliance Conference where over 170 people attended. While he is the Secretary of IOSH London Metropolitan Construction Section (2021 to 2023), he is a Member of the Health in Construction Leadership group UK. As an Approved STEM Ambassador for construction and the built environment, he has a platform to inspire and motivate younger people to take up a career in the construction industry.
Nnedinma has received various honours/recognitions/awards not limited to CIB W099 bursary Award; UCEM Principal's Development Award; UCEM Values award for Passion ' and three nominations from the school of which two are for the teaching award of ‘Recognition of Excellence' for two consecutive years and one for ‘Innovation in Teaching and Learning'; the 2019 Taylor and Francis Book and Digital Product Award in the Outstanding Monograph Category in 2020; and the Ceylon Institute of Builders (CIOB) Best Paper Award at the 9th World Construction Symposium, 9-10 July 2021, Sri Lanka.
