Our Construction Management and Economics MSc prepares you for leadership roles in the construction and property industries - developing your analytical, technical and managerial skills.
This Master's in Construction Management and Economics was developed in response to a growing demand for capable and creative professionals from the construction and property industries. We therefore prioritise strategic thinking and the skills needed to respond to volatile economic conditions.
On this course, you will learn the theory and application of economics, finance and management in the context of large-scale construction projects. Our modules include construction economics, construction project management, development economics and planning, and real estate development and investment.
Graduates will be able to pursue roles in project and construction management consultancy, quantity surveying, or careers within construction companies, environmental agencies, local authorities and regeneration agencies.

Entry requirements
You should have an honours degree 2:2 or above or an equivalent qualification in a built environment discipline, such as civil engineering, construction, surveying or architecture. We will consider undergraduate degrees in other disciplines on an individual basis.
Alternatively, we will consider relevant experience with membership of an appropriate professional body.
This course is accredited by a leading professional body, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). RICS accreditation demonstrates that a course has reached a globally recognised standard of surveying education.

How you will learn
Teaching
In a typical week, you will have lectures, seminars, and workshops (which may include critiques) to discuss your work with colleagues and tutors. Visiting lecturers will also be available in each term for specialist lectures, workshops and tutorials. Theory courses will be taught alongside other Master's programmes to encourage subject crossover and multidisciplinary views.
Contact hours may fall between 9am and 9pm, depending on your elective courses and tutorials.
Class sizes
The typical student intake per year averages 20-30. Students also take part in shared/collaborative modules with students on other built environment course. This provides an ideal opportunity to develop skills in group and teamwork. Numbers can vary more widely for modules that are shared between courses.
Independent learning
Outside of timetabled sessions, you are also expected to dedicate time to independent study (around 8-10 hours per module per week).
Every module will involve further reading and research. You may also be expected to spend time preparing for classwork such as presentations and group discussions, and for assessed coursework and examinations. You can use our Stockwell Street library and online resources to support you in these activities.
In addition, during the week you can also:
- Attend additional support classes in some modules
- Attend guest lectures from industry experts
- Take part in employability and enterprise workshops
- Join student societies.
Overall workload
If you are studying full-time, you should expect the workload to be similar to a full-time job. For part-time students, this will reduce in proportion with the number of courses you are studying.
Assessment
There are variety of assessments, including coursework, a portfolio, presentations and exams. Each course has formal assessments which count towards your grade. Portfolio submission presentations, essays and reports all form part of your degree. Some courses may also include practice assessments, which help you monitor progress and do not count towards your final grade.
Feedback summary
For all assessment, you will be provided with feedback to help you improve. We aim to give feedback on assignments within 15 working days.

This course is aimed at individuals with backgrounds in built environment, engineering and architecture who are looking for management and leadership positions within the construction, property and surveying practices industries.
It is also designed for mid-career professionals preparing to make the transition into the construction and property industry.
Do you provide employability services?
We have a dedicated employability team for postgraduate students to consult about opportunities relevant to the course. They work closely with professionals in industry to ensure you are well-prepared for the workplace and have begun to build your professional network by the time you graduate.
The central Employability and Careers Service also provides support for students preparing to apply for placements and graduate roles, such as CV clinics, mock interviews and employability skills workshops.

Academic skills and study support
We want you to make the most of your time with us. You can access study skills support through your tutor, our subject librarians, and our online academic skills centre.
Where appropriate, we provide support in academic English and mathematics. If you need to use particular IT packages for a specific module, we provide training for this.
Support from the department
All students on Built Environment courses get access to Microsoft Project and RICS BCIS online.
As a master's student with us, you will be a member of a larger creative community. Joining societies such as RICS will also help you network, build skills, and present new opportunities.
We also provide pastoral support throughout your studies. You will have a personal tutor and access to training in study skills, dissertation preparation, methods and ethics. You can also access advice on employability and careers.
