Access Greenwich

Access Greenwich is our pre-entry course designed to introduce you to a range of independent, digital and academic skills before you progress to your degree programme.

Access Greenwich is a pathway to degree study with us. If you are invited to study Access Greenwich, you will be offered a place on one of our degree programmes subject to passing this pre-entry course.

Course content includes:

  • Reflective practice including the use of reflective frameworks to guide learning and development throughout your degree
  • Familiarisation with the academic and pastoral support services available at Greenwich and how to access and utilise these services throughout your studies.
  • Navigating digital technologies to support learning
  • Approaches to research including familiarisation with library services and how to access and critically examine physical and digital resources
  • Academic integrity
  • Reading and note taking techniques
  • Academic writing

Who is Access Greenwich for?

If you have been out of education for a long time, or you lack academic qualifications but have been working in a related field and have the motivation and interest to study at degree level, Access Greenwich is for you.

Access Greenwich may also be for you if have undertaken further study at a sixth form or college with the intention of progressing to university, but extenuating circumstances meant you didn’t achieve the final outcomes you had hoped you would.

What is the tuition fee for Access Greenwich?

There is no cost for this course.

When and where will Access Greenwich take place?

The course will take place in the final week of August and first three weeks of September, with teaching split between our campuses and online delivery.

The course will require an approximate commitment of 20 hours a week with 10-15 hours of timetabled teaching and up to a further 10 hours of independent study.

A full timetable, including meeting instructions for the first day, will be shared with students who have accepted their place on the course.

How do I pass the Access Greenwich course?

You will need to attend at least 80% of all taught sessions and pass a coursework-style assessment, which you will have the opportunity to work on throughout the course and to produce with support from your tutors.

What support is available?

A dedicated team of experienced academic and digital skills tutors to guide you through the course.

Access to university libraries, including computer and Internet access for the duration of the course.

Lunch will be provided for each day on campus.

A contribution to travel expenses of up to £30 per week for students from POLAR 4 Quintile 1 or 2 (check your postcode here). If are not from one of these postcodes and would face financial barriers to travelling to campus, please get in touch on outreach@gre.ac.uk for a confidential discussion about your circumstances and we will consider whether there are ways we may be able to assist you.

How do I apply?

If you have already made a UCAS application, you can login to your account and add Greenwich and your chosen degree programme as a choice and your application will come to us this way.

Otherwise, you can apply for the Access Greenwich pathway using our online application form.

Once you have created an account and completed your personal details, on the programme information tab select the degree programme that you would like to apply for (subject to successfully completing Access Greenwich). For example:

The next step is to provide supporting information including a personal statement. Please include ‘Access Greenwich’ at the top of the personal statement box but focus on the degree programme you would like to progress to in the main body of the text.

The personal statement is an opportunity for you to tell us about you and your suitability for your chosen degree programme. This could include:

The reasons you want to study your chosen degree programme – where does your interest in the subject and motivation to study it at university come from?

Where the course requires specific skills or knowledge e.g. mathematical or scientific, show an understanding of the programme you are applying for and demonstrate how your previous education, independent study, training or work experience has prepared you for this next step in your education.

There is also an opportunity to include employment details and a reference in your application form. If you have work experience in a related field to the degree programme you are applying for, please provide details of this and include a referee from this employer. The referee should aim to comment on your suitability for university study and/or a career in a related field.

Once you have submitted your application form, we’ll consider all parts and decide whether we can offer you the degree programme you have applied for, or in some cases we may offer you an alternative, subject to successfully completing Access Greenwich.
