The University of Greenwich is marking Stephen Lawrence Day 2025 on Tuesday, 22 April, with a powerful weeklong programme of events and activities honouring the life and legacy of Stephen Lawrence.

This Stephen Lawrence Day marks the 32nd anniversary of Stephen’s death. Stephen was a teenager when he was murdered in a racially motivated attack in 1993.

The 22 April now marks a day of national reflection and commitment to racial equality, serving as one of our most important days on the University of Greenwich calendar.

Associate Director of External Engagement, Mary Ivers spoke about the importance of Stephen Lawrence Day and how we will be remembering Stephen this year.

“Stephen Lawrence Day is more than remembrance — it is a call to action. At Greenwich, we are working together to break down barriers and build a future defined by fairness, opportunity, and respect for all.”

“This year’s programme is both a tribute, and a platform where voices are heard, talents are celebrated, and the future is shaped”

In honour of Stephen Lawrence Day, we are proud to showcase a collection of displays in the Project Space, Stockwell Street Building 11 that reflect Stephen’s life, legacy, and lasting impact in the ongoing fight for justice and racial equality.

Created to inspire reflection and action, the exhibition invites students, staff, and visitors to engage with Stephen’s story and his influence on communities and education in the UK.

The exhibition will open on Tuesday, 22 April and close on Friday, 25 April.

The Project Space is located on the ground floor of Stockwell Street Building 11, opposite the Stephen Lawrence Gallery and is open to the public.

Stephen Lawrence Day x Big Ideas: Challenging Inequality – Wednesday 23 April

Outreach and Educational Partnerships Team has coordinated the first in their Big Ideas series to coincide with Stephen Lawrence Day. This event aims to bring together schools/colleges from across the local community to reflect on Stephen Lawrence’s life. We will explore ways in which we can harness the opportunity to teach young people about inequality through different subject lenses. This event will not only give students a taster of different subjects they might take into Higher Education but also empower them to discuss issues of racism and discrimination more widely. The event will take place on 23rd April 2025 at Greenwich Campus and will be attended by around 100 Year 12 students from local partner schools.
