When Alison chose to pursue the MBA Finance programme at the University of Greenwich, he was looking for more than just academic theory. With a strong background in finance and commerce, he wanted a course that would sharpen his technical knowledge while preparing him for leadership and professional growth. The balance of academic learning with real-world application is what drew him to Greenwich, and it has exceeded his expectations.
From day one, Alison was immersed in an environment that challenged and inspired them. Access to advanced resources such as the Bloomberg Terminal allowed him to analyse market data and trends, building skills that mirror those required in top financial institutions. Beyond the classroom, he embraced leadership opportunities, being elected as the MBA Finance Programme Representative for both Year 1 and Year 2. In this role, Alison represented student voices, collaborated with faculty, and contributed directly to programme development, gaining valuable experience in advocacy and problem-solving.
Professional Placement
A turning point in Alison’s MBA journey has been his placement as a Finance Assistant with the Greenwich Students’ Union (GSU). This role offered him a chance to put theory into practice within a fast-paced, multi-million-pound organisation.
During his placement, Alison quickly found himself taking on responsibilities that had a real impact on the organisation. Each day brought something different, from managing and reconciling large financial transactions to processing invoices and maintaining strong relationships with suppliers. He kept a close eye on budgets for student-led projects, making sure funds were used effectively, and prepared financial summaries and dashboards to support departments across the Union. Working alongside senior finance staff, Alison contributed to monthly reporting, variance analysis, and audit preparation, while also playing a role in shaping cash flow improvement strategies and financial planning discussions. Beyond the numbers, he shared his knowledge with new team members, introducing best practices that strengthened the finance team as a whole. His proactive and solution-focused approach quickly set him apart, leading to smoother audits, stronger financial oversight, and ultimately recognition in the form of the GSU Value Award for Courage, a proud highlight of his placement journey.
The MBA Finance programme has been instrumental in preparing Alison for success in his placement. Modules in financial management, risk assessment, and strategic decision-making gave him the confidence to handle tasks such as budget forecasting and operational planning. Hands-on training with professional tools like the Bloomberg Terminal sharpened his analytical skills, which he applied directly in financial reporting and resource allocation at GSU.
Equally important were the programme’s simulations and group projects, which strengthened Alison’s communication, teamwork, and critical thinking. These skills proved vital when presenting financial insights to non-finance stakeholders and working collaboratively across departments.
Lessons in leadership and growth
For Alison, the most valuable takeaway from his time at Greenwich has been the opportunity to step into leadership roles and embrace challenges head-on. Serving as Programme Representative built his confidence to advocate for others, while his placement taught him the importance of precision, accountability, and collaboration. Winning awards for his contributions was a proud reminder that stepping out of his comfort zone and taking initiative can have a lasting impact.
Reflecting on his journey, Alison strongly encourages other MBA students to take advantage of placement opportunities.
A placement transforms your MBA experience. It gives you the chance to apply what you’re learning in real time, build confidence, and develop skills you can’t get from textbooks alone. Time management is key; stay organised, plan, and communicate with your supervisors. And don’t be afraid to push yourself beyond your comfort zone, because that’s where the real growth happens.
