After doing a placement year at the Walt Disney Company, Jenny comes back and talks to us about how the University of Greenwich Business School helped her achieve her goals.

My name is Jenny Hamblin, I am a BA Events Management student from the UK in my final year at the University of Greenwich. I knew I wanted to study Events Management as a course before looking at which university I wanted to go to. The moment I saw the Greenwich campus I instantly fell in love with it. Studying events in London was also a bonus for me as it meant that I would be able to gain experience at some of the world's biggest events alongside my studies which I may not have had the opportunity to do at another university.

I came to university a year after I left school, this was because I wanted to be sure of my decision and didn’t want to rush the process. When I decided I wanted to study events, I did a lot of research into different courses and recognised Greenwich to be the best for Events Management in London. I have always been a practical person and wanted to find a course that would teach me theory as well as putting my learnings into practice. This is something that I recognised the University of Greenwich does well and it was a big factor for my decision. I have always had a passion for events and am inspired in every lecture I attend.
The lecturers are great at explaining things and keep lectures fun, engaging and inspiring. Never once on my course have I felt that I am not being supported by my lecturers or the department.

I struggle with dyslexia and have always found myself very easily distracted until I came to Greenwich!

The lecturers help me to believe in myself and inspire me to do my best work and reach my highest potential.

Without them, I would not be where I am today and I will forever be proud to have been taught by them.

Over the entire course my favourite module has been Cultural and Third Sector Events. I think this may be because I did my placement in social responsibility where I saw a lot of the theories and models from this module put into practice in the workplace which was really inspiring to me.

My course has provided me with amazing opportunities which have helped me to get to where I am today, without this I possibly wouldn’t have been successful with my placement year.

Working for The Walt Disney company was my ultimate goal after I left university and so I knew I wanted to take a course where I would have the opportunity to do a placement as Disney offered them. After my second year, I undertook a placement year at The Walt Disney Company as a social responsibility intern. This was one of the most incredible experiences and one I will never forget.

Without coming to Greenwich and doing my course I would never have been able to have this experience. It is something that has genuinely changed my life and so I can strongly say it has definitely helped me with my career.

My plans for the future is something I am still figuring out whilst in my final year. At the moment, I think I would like to combine the events industry and social responsibility by gaining experience in the charity events sector. However, I am open to any new opportunities that cross my path!

My biggest piece of advice would be to gain as much experience as you can.

Being able to take the time alongside your studies to experience the industry first-hand is such a unique opportunity.

By gaining experience I was able to learn what areas of the events sector I enjoyed most. Learning about it in the classroom helps give you an idea, but until you experience these events first-hand you don’t really know what it entails.

I would also recommend reaching out to the BSEO for further support if you are struggling to find or gain experience, they are experts in this area!
