An initiative that reflects the University of Greenwich’s commitment to inclusivity and STEM
I am an international student from Pakistan. I completed my undergraduate degree in mathematics and began exploring how mathematical concepts are applied in real-world problem-solving. That’s when I discovered data science and was fascinated by how closely it links with mathematics, particularly in areas like statistics, modelling and algorithms. I first discovered the University of Greenwich while researching options for the British Council Women in STEM Scholarship. I was excited to find that the University of Greenwich was offering MSc Data Science programme in partnership with the scholarship. It was the ideal opportunity for me, and I was fortunate to be selected, turning a long-held academic goal into reality.
Greenwich immediately stood out for its commitment to supporting women in technology. The university’s partnership with initiatives like the British Council Women in STEM Scholarship reflects its genuine commitment to empowering underrepresented groups in tech.
A vibrant and inclusive student experience at Greenwich
University life at Greenwich has offered me a vibrant and inclusive social experience. Gatherings have created opportunities to connect with fellow students, share experiences, and feel part of a diverse and dynamic community. I live in university-managed accommodation at Avery Hill, which has provided a comfortable and supportive living environment and I use the free shuttle bus service offered by the university to commute to the Greenwich Campus.
What makes the University of Greenwich stand out for me is the way it supports students coming from different academic backgrounds. As someone transitioning from mathematics to data science, I found the teaching approach here incredibly accessible. The lecturers break down complex topics, like machine learning, Python programming, and statistical modelling, in a way that builds confidence even for beginners. The support I’ve received on my project, especially through one-on-one guidance from my supervisor, has been invaluable.
Look ahead to the future
After completing my degree, I aspire to apply my skills in a meaningful way, whether in industry, research, or healthcare, by working on data-driven solutions that create real impact. I am particularly interested in roles that involve machine learning, data analysis, or medical AI applications. In the long term, I hope to contribute to innovative projects that use data to solve complex problems, improve decision-making, and positively affect people’s lives. I also aim to continue learning and growing in the field, possibly pursuing a PhD to deepen my expertise and contribute to academic research.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the support and opportunities I’ve received at the University of Greenwich. As an international student and a recipient of the British Council Women in STEM Scholarship, studying here has been a life-changing experience. It has helped me grow not only academically but also personally, by challenging me to step out of my comfort zone and build skills that I never thought I could.
I’m truly grateful to be part of a university that values diversity, inclusion, and academic excellence, and I look forward to carrying this experience forward into my future career and studies.
