My Human Nutrition and Health journey at the University of Greenwich
Moving to a new country, studying in my third language, and returning to education after an eight-year break were significant challenges. Yet my journey at the University of Greenwich, from Foundation Year student to graduating with a First-Class BSc Human Nutrition and Health degree, became a life-changing experience that shaped my confidence, ambitions, and career goals.
Why I chose to study Human Nutrition and Health
My interest in nutrition, health, and disease prevention began at an early age. I was always fascinated by how the human body works and how lifestyle choices can help prevent illness. This passion developed further while studying at a hospitality school in Italy, where nutrition formed part of my education for five years.
After working as a professional chef for 11 years across Italy, Spain, and England, I realised that my true passion extended beyond preparing food. I wanted to understand the science behind nutrition and learn how food can improve health, wellbeing, and quality of life. This led me to pursue a Human Nutrition and Health degree at the University of Greenwich.
Building confidence through the Foundation Year
Choosing to return to education was not an easy decision. As English is my third language and I had spent several years away from academic study, I initially questioned whether I could succeed at university level.
The UGIC Foundation Year provided the academic preparation, study skills, and confidence I needed to progress successfully onto the degree programme. The supportive learning environment helped me develop the knowledge and resilience required to excel throughout my studies.
Support from the University of Greenwich
One of the highlights of studying Human Nutrition and Health at the University of Greenwich was the exceptional support I received from both the academic team and the wider Faculty of Engineering and Science. Dedicated lecturers, including Dr Shaobo Zhou and Dr Zahra Khan, encouraged me to think critically, strengthen my scientific understanding, and recognise my potential as a future nutrition professional. Alongside subject knowledge, I gained valuable transferable skills that will support my future career in nutrition and healthcare.
International opportunities and student success
My experience at Greenwich extended far beyond the classroom. During my studies, I was selected for a funded Go Abroad programme at Dongguk University in South Korea. This international opportunity broadened my perspective, enhanced my cultural awareness, and strengthened my confidence as an international student.
I was also honoured to receive the School of Science Star of the Future Award, recognising my academic achievements, potential, and contribution to the university community.
Achieving First-Class Honours
Graduating with a First-Class BSc Human Nutrition and Health degree is one of my proudest achievements. Throughout my studies, I maintained a First-Class average and achieved an outstanding 92% in my dissertation.
More importantly, my academic journey demonstrated how determination, hard work, and support can transform career aspirations into reality. I progressed from being a professional chef with a passion for health to becoming a confident nutrition graduate prepared for the next stage of my professional journey.
Future career plans in nutrition
Following graduation, I plan to continue my education with a master's degree in Italy before pursuing my long-term ambition of opening my own nutrition clinic.
My goal is to help people improve their health through evidence-based nutrition advice, empowering individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles and reduce their risk of chronic disease.
Advice for future University of Greenwich students
My advice to anyone considering a Human Nutrition and Health degree at the University of Greenwich is simple: believe in yourself, ask for support when you need it, and embrace every opportunity available to you.
Studying at the University of Greenwich gave me the knowledge, confidence, and professional direction to turn my passion for nutrition into a rewarding future career. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made and an experience that has prepared me for success in the field of nutrition and health.
