Get paid and gain real work experience at the same time

TLDRoffon

Digital and Technology Solutions apprentice Bradley Watts is able to earn money and gain work experience as an employee within his industry through his apprenticeship with Ford and the University of Greenwich.

A way to learn vital industry skills

Bradley’s Digital and Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeship allows him to learn through a variety of technical and business-related modules such as Project Management and Operations and Information Technology. The prospect of coupling modules such as these with real work experience was the reason he was drawn to the programme.

I chose to do an apprenticeship because I knew I could get paid and gain real work experience at the same time, all while studying for a degree that is paid for, meaning I will incur no student debt or loan.

Bradley compliments his studies at the University of Greenwich with his work four days a week as a Software Engineer at Ford, which allows him to put into practice the knowledge he gains from his course. At Ford, he is able to work under and alongside experienced colleagues and extend his learning further – learning coding in Java, for example, which is a vital industry skill. For these reasons, Bradley describes his experience as an apprentice as very different to his experiences as a school student.

Bradley’s supervisor at Ford has high praise for his work so far, saying Bradley has been “instrumental” to the success of the team this year. He goes on to say that “with no previous coding knowledge, Bradley has really tackled the training head on” and he has witnessed a real desire from Bradley to tackle his work and enhance his skills, delivering value to the team.

Passionate lecturers at Greenwich

Bradley commends his lecturers, particularly Mike Sharp, and says it is the quality of teaching that makes Greenwich the place to study a degree apprenticeship.

Greenwich stands out from other universities because of the passion the lecturers have for their modules. They teach in ways that engage the class.

A qualification that opens up so many opportunities

Bradley explains digital technology and solutions graduates can enter a number of IT roles, or can commence non-technical roles, becoming product managers, designers, business analysts and more. He says these careers, and the subject of digital and technology solutions as a whole, have a “huge impact” on people’s lives.

“We’re creating a better future with the technology we have today. The IT field in general is high in demand, and software developers have some of the most highly-demanded skills.”

As a graduate, Bradley will have a degree as well as years of relevant work experience behind him.
