Fraudsters try to trick us by claiming to be a trusted person like a colleague, senior leader or a student. These impersonation emails give us a false sense of security that we’re dealing with a valid query. Our email filters have been updated to help you keep our data and systems safe.
Suspicious message alerts for staff and students
Fraudsters use public information about our staff and students to impersonate them. Be cautious if you receive a message flagged [SUSPICIOUS MESSAGE] at the start of the subject. This means our email filtering service has identified that it did not come from within the university and may be a fraudster pretending to be your colleague or our student.
Follow our advice on identifying a phishing message and report it if it’s not legitimate.
Messages impersonating senior leaders are put on hold
Our senior leadership team are often impersonated by fraudsters. We receive approximately 1000 messages a week from outside the university which claim to be from one of our senior leadership team. We have updated our security settings so these messages are now put on hold and can only be released upon request to our security team. To request release of a held message you can raise a “Microsoft Outlook (Email)” request via our IT Service Desk.
