His four simple tips are:
- AWARENESS: Be aware of your surroundings; always know where you are relative to the exit, and always have at least two exit routes in mind.
- PREPAREDNESS: Have a plan, think about how you would get out in an emergency.
- SPEED: When you hear the alarm, respond quickly; every second counts, so don't waste time.
- FIRE DOORS: Make sure the fire doors are not damaged or wedged open, and have a functioning automatic door closer. Report any problems.
Prof Galea also says "Remember, above all else, when it comes to surviving a fire, 'chance favours the prepared mind.'
