Prof Ed Galea, Director of FSEG shares 4 simple safety tips that everyone should follow

TLDRoffon

Prof Ed Galea has over 30 years’ experience researching fire and how people react to fire and other emergencies. His four simple safety tips are for anyone in any building, be it a lecture hall, halls of residence, an office building, hotel, theatre, sports stadium, airport or underground station.

His four simple tips are:

  1. AWARENESS:  Be aware of your surroundings; always know where you are relative to the exit, and always have at least two exit routes in mind.
  2. PREPAREDNESS:  Have a plan, think about how you would get out in an emergency.
  3. SPEED:  When you hear the alarm, respond quickly; every second counts, so don't waste time.
  4. FIRE DOORS:  Make sure the fire doors are not damaged or wedged open, and have a functioning automatic door closer.  Report any problems.

Prof Galea also says "Remember, above all else, when it comes to surviving a fire, 'chance favours the prepared mind.'
