Accessing academic resources: Keeping your information and our systems safe online

TLDRoffon

Providing your university email and password to unofficial websites offering “free” academic papers leaves the university at risk of a cyber-attack. Whether you’re looking for research papers, academic articles or other texts, our Libraries can help.

Information security is important to us all at Greenwich. We are sharing key points to consider when studying online and how to access resources through our existing services with our staff and students.

Sharing your login details with sites which host stolen intellectual property leaves you vulnerable to having your login credentials stolen. Providing your university email and password to a 3rd party leaves the university at risk of a cyber-attack. To avoid this, follow the guidance below.

Remember, keep your password to yourself

  • You must never share your university username and password with anyone, and you must not use your university password on other websites or apps.
  • If you suspect that someone knows your password, or you have previously used it on other sites, please change it immediately
  • Sites which host stolen intellectual property ask for your username and password for a reason; so they can use it or resell it to a cyber-criminal. This puts our systems at risk.
  • Keep your university email and login details for university systems access only. Even if the site is legitimate, don't use your university email address, user ID or password on social media, personal cloud services or online stores.
  • And remember; never share any of your passwords with others.

Accessing papers, articles and texts

Our campus libraries should always be your, and your students’, first port of call for physical and online resources. Do not use or recommend sites that bypass copyright or licence access restrictions, and never pay any publisher or provider to access materials. If in doubt, you can always check with your academic subject librarian for advice.

  • Library Search is the tool to discover books, full text journal articles, conference papers and proceedings, reports, eBooks and some audio-visual content.
  • Document Delivery is a service enabling you to access books and articles not held within our university libraries. If you are unable to find the item you require, please complete the Document Delivery Request form via the link in LibrarySearch.
  • Greenwich Academic Literature Archive (GALA) provides free access to thousands of peer-reviewed articles, conference papers, theses and book chapters and more produced by researchers at the university. GALA can be searched by anyone, anywhere and full text content is free to download.

If you can't find the resources you're looking for, you can check in with our academic subject librarians, who can help you with database searches, finding information and literature reviews, they are experts in finding resources for your subject.
