Joe Woodman and Samuel Hall, Graphics and Digital Design students, have won a D&AD New Blood award for their project The Route of Pollution.
For the awards, students have to respond to a challenge set by sponsors. In this case, Joe and Samuel were required to identify a problem in the UK community and use 5G and giffgaff to solve it.
The problem they set out to address was the effects of living in highly polluted areas, including the increased likelihood of developing asthma, heart problems and lung disease. They created as app that would use live data to find the most up-to-date clean air routes through city streets. This would allow parents to plan the cleanest route to school each day.
To make the app engaging to children, air pollution is brought to life as monsters, wrecking havoc on the planet, which users would try to avoid on their walk to school. As part of their proposal, they included social media and marketing suggestions, including collectible cards featuring the app's monsters.
