The event was organised by the Scholarship Excellence in Business Education (SEBE) network. The event focused on contemporary approaches to assessment design, exploring how universities can respond to changing expectations in higher education — including the influence of generative AI, evolving employer expectations, and increasingly diverse student learning needs.
While the event was hosted within the Business School, the themes are relevant across disciplines. Assessment design sits at the intersection of curriculum, student experience, and academic standards, and many of the frameworks discussed — such as authentic assessment, flexible assessment, and AI-supported assessment redesign — are applicable to a wide range of subject areas.
For colleagues interested in these topics, we are pleased to share several resources from the day below. These materials may be useful for colleagues reflecting on curriculum design, reviewing assessment practices, or exploring emerging approaches to assessment across the sector.
Video Highlights
Over the coming days, we will share three short highlight videos from the Assessment Day sessions:
Authentic Assessment – David Tree David’s session explored how programme teams can systematically evaluate the authenticity of their assessments and consider how real-world relevance can be strengthened across a programme.
Flexible Assessment – Miri Firth & John Tull
This discussion examined a 4C framework to designing flexibility while maintaining academic standards, drawing on national frameworks and institutional experience.
AI-Supported Assessment Redesign – Crystal Tsay & Jimmy Lo (CARA)
This session introduced CARA, a GenAI-supported assessment redesign Microsoft co-pilot agent that helps educators think through design choices and redesign assessment and feedback processes at scale and aligned with institutional policies.

Authentic Assessment tool scoring guide
A paper that helps you make sense of your scoring results: Baines, S., Pauldy Otermans, Tree, D. and Worsfold, N. (2024). Measuring and mapping authentic assessment with a novel quantitative typology. Teaching in Higher Education, 30(3), pp.1–20. doi: https://doi.org/10.1080/13562517.2024.2424823
Flexible Assessment Case Examples
Colleagues are welcome to share examples of flexible assessment practice using the case study template which is upper right on the Padlet.
CARA – Collaborative Assessment Redesign Assistant
You are invited to add CARA to your Microsoft Copilot and explore how it can support assessment redesign. Instructions are available on the SWAY page. After experimenting with the tool, please complete the evaluation form to help us improve it.
Please note that CARA operates within the Microsoft 365 protected environment at the University of Greenwich, ensuring that institutional materials can be used safely.
British Academy of Management – AI in Education Symposium
Colleagues interested in the broader conversation on AI in education may wish to attend the upcoming symposium:
We hope these materials will be helpful for colleagues who are reviewing assessment practices, redesigning modules, or exploring how assessment can better support learning, inclusion, and employability across different disciplines.
Colleagues who are interested in learning more about the Assessment Day, accessing further resources, or engaging with the work of SEBE (Scholarship Excellence in Business Education) are very welcome to get in touch with the SEBE Co-Directors: Dr Crystal Tsay and Dr Sara Gorgoni
