As Disability History Month 2023 draws to a close, the Disabled Staff Community and STAART invite our friends and colleagues to join two free one hour sessions being offered by our partners:

Disabled Women in Academia, Panel Event

When: Monday 11 December, 2-3PM

Where: online only

This panel event brings together women with disabilities in academia at different stages of their careers. They will reflect on their journeys; what support is available and what still needs to be done in academia to empower women with disabilities.

This event is a collaboration between DMU, Royal Holloway University Gender Institute, Royal Holloway University Disabled Staff Network and the Women in Academia Support Network (WIASN).

Ableism in Academia: Listening to Lived Experience and Challenging Practice

When: Tuesday 12 December, 2-3PM

Where: online only

This session will highlight a range of issues including stigma and disclosure that impact on the experience of disabled academics. A number of recommendations will be made directed at institutions, allies, and policy makers in order to address academic ableism and support disabled academics.

These sessions both speak to issues that are at the heart of supporting the disabled experience and are current in terms of work we are doing institutionally.

“You're disabled [and protected against discrimination/unfair treatment] under the Equality Act 2010 if you have a physical or mental impairment that has a 'substantial' and 'long-term' negative effect on your ability to do normal daily activities.”

For more information about these events, please contact the organisers directly via the Eventbrite links provided above. If you are going to join one or both of these sessions, Alan Dudley, co-chair of the Disabled Staff Community, would welcome your feedback.

You can email Alan at A.C.Dudley@gre.ac.uk or Contact him on Teams.
