Greenwich alumni, Executive TV Producer Michael Kelpie, Potato, ITV (The Chase) led an industry focused pitch exercise with UoG students in the Multicam TV studio at the university’s Stockwell Street building.

Mary Mullen, Lecturer in TV Studio, said: 313551

“The exercise took place in the Multicam TV studio and provided students with a valuable opportunity to access industry insights and feedback for programme ideas. One of the most valuable aspects of the exercise was the conversation and exchange between the students and Michael and to see how this became a catalyst for confidence and programme ideas develop further.

“Students' feedback included reflections about the value of the exercise; new knowledge and insight gained about their pitch and development process, the audience, content and importance of research. Students commented on how through the developmental discussion, new ideas and approaches for their programmes came into view!”

25 2nd year BA FTV students were divided up into two teams. Each team pitched a programme idea for a multicam Magazine Format TV Show, which Michael gave feedback on.

One student said:

“His criticism was very constructive and helped inform us on how to make our idea more entertaining and more effective. He also gave us valuable insight into the industry and through his personal experience he was able to help us understand who our target audience is and what would appeal specifically go them. All of this helped inform our pitch development process.”

Students also heard from Jessica Willson, Production Talent Executive at Potato, who spoke to students alongside Michael for the afternoon session about preparing for jobs in the industry.

Michael enrolled on the inaugural year of BA Hons Media & Communication Studies at University of Greenwich. Since then, Michael has forged a hugely successful career at numerous UK Production Companies and Broadcasters across a huge variety of genres of programming from Lifestyle to Entertainment, Comedy to Crime, Daytime to Primetime, becoming one of the UK’s leading TV Producers.
