The official launch of the LASE University Group will be marked on Monday 7 September – exactly one year since the two universities announced their intention to formally explore a merger – with a special ceremonial moment that will be celebrated across all four campuses - Greenwich, Avery Hill, Medway and Canterbury.
The new multi-university group, described as ‘the UK’s first super-university’, is a first of its kind model – allowing the creation of the new university group whilst enabling the two universities to continue trading under their individual names with their distinct identities, courses, and local presence. It is designed to enable other universities to join in the future. Students will continue to apply to, study at, and graduate from the University of Greenwich or the University of Kent
The intention to merge was first announced in September 2025. Since then, there has been a year of intense activity to develop the blueprint, working closely with the Department for Education and Office for Students to gain approval for the unique model and navigate the complex regulatory landscape.
A new Chancellor, governing body and senior executive team for LASE have been appointed and officially take up their roles today. Further integration work during the new group’s founding years will continue to build on the strengths and opportunities of the two universities coming together.
Professor Jane Harrington is the founding Vice-Chancellor and CEO of LASE, and is supported by a senior team including Professor Georgina Randsley de Moura as the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy CEO.

LASE University Group becomes the third largest university in the UK, with two universities (the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent), more than 50,000 students and four campuses across London, Medway and Kent.
