One of London’s most popular modern universities is Greenwich, according to a new report.
UCAS figures published by WonkHE show Greenwich has the third largest increase (18.4%) in people accepting undergraduate places of any London university. The increase of 885 puts Greenwich after UCL (University College London) and King’s College London. It is also first in the list of University Alliance (UA) institutions, a group of professional and technical universities.
Greenwich continues to have strong levels of mainstream applications, which is applications received by UCAS before Clearing starts. The university continues to recruit strongly in London, with the figures showing 15,860 mainstream applications. In total 3,220 people from London accepted places at Greenwich.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jane Harrington, said: “These figures are very encouraging, especially given the challenges presented by the pandemic and calculated grades replacing A levels. It is especially pleasing to score so highly in London and among our peers. These are testing times for us all and the importance of education has never been greater.”
Greenwich was recently named the top Modern London University for graduate prospects in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021. This table looks at students going on to employment or further study. It is also the number one university in Kent in the same category.
Modern universities are post-1992 UK universities, which were former polytechnics or central institutions, that received university status through the Further and Higher Education Act 1992.
Their original focus was on applied education for professional work, with a concentration on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects, as well as a strong focus on learning for professional practice.
