Series looks at key parts of data harvesting

A four-part series looking at the ethics and sustainability issues involved in data harvesting in four key digital realms – intimacy, gaming, consumerism and body data – starts next week.

A Nudge and a Push is a series of four Zoom talks debating ethics in participatory, interactive and immersive experiences.119472

Remote intimacy in times of social distancing opens the event on Thursday 28 April (6.30pm UK time). Presented by lead curator Ghilslaine Boddiington, of the University of Greenwich, the discussion will look at the technologies used to create a sense of intimacy.

Ghislaine said: “In the first talk we will explore how these technologies are evolving to be more expressive and even sensuous. How might we use innovative technology to show and deliver affection from a distance?

“These four events will explore some of the key questions facing us as technology and ‘real life’ grow ever closer.

“Speakers from a diverse range of backgrounds - creative industries, academia, policy, culture and business - from the UK and internationally, will join us to explore these topical and important issues online. Speakers will be added to the information as confirmed.”

The four discussions are:

Remote intimacy in times of social distancing, 28 April, 6.30pm – 8pm.

Chair, Ghislaine Boddington (Creative Director, body>data>space / Reader in Digital Immersion, University of Greenwich). “A discussion on the technologies used to create a sense of intimacy, and how they are evolving to be more expressive and even sensuous. How might we use technology in the future to show and deliver affection from a distance? How can we ensure personal data protection?”

The pervasive ethical issues in retail and consumerism – modifying behavioural patterns for ethical consumption, 19 May, 4.30pm – 6pm.

Chair, Dr Olga Martin-Ortega (Professor of International Law, University of Greenwich) and Eva Pascoe (Director of Ecommerce at The Retail Practice / Chair of Cybersalon). “In a data-driven world, consumers can also become part of the supply chain as their data is collected and used to maximise profit. To what extent can we embed social and ethical values beyond the law?”

Gaming for good – sustainable consumption, 19 May, 6.30pm – 8pm.

Chair, Dr Jorge Lopes Ramos (Executive Director, ZU-UK, Associate Professor in Contemporary Performance, University of Greenwich). “While gaming is often considered frivolous and tainted with a sense of childishness, it can be used to create social cohesion. How can the instruction and rule-systems of games be used as fields of experimentation for new ways of thinking about social structures?”

Sustainable and ethical use of body data in immersion environments, 9 June, 6.30pm – 8pm. Chair, Ghislaine Boddington. “Harvesting of personal data gathered from participatory interaction is rarely debated in the creative industry, but VR, AR, and interactive gaming all involve biometric data gathering without much attention to the ethics. How can we ensure protection from the harvesting of our data by big business?”

This series of panels is part of the DATUM R&D project and aims to debate the emerging sustainable options while finding good solutions for all involved - the user and the creator, the individual and the business sector.

These events will all be held online via Zoom, login details will be emailed to all participants on the day of the event. Places are free but advance booking is required: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a-nudge-and-a-push-ethical-sustainability-in-invisible-data-harvesting-tickets-147123744079
