Thank you for joining us for Red, White and Black Day

TLDRoffon

On 26 October and 3 November, we celebrated Red, White and Black Day with Charlton Athletic Football Club.

Fans watching the charlton red white and black dayRed, White and Black day has been running for over 30 years and is Charlton Athletic FC’s (CAFC) and Charlton Athletic Community Trust’s (CACT) annual themed home game dedicated to raising awareness and celebrating Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

EDI is at the heart of the university’s 2030 Strategy and is woven into our core values of being inclusive, collaborative and impactful. We were pleased to champion Red, White and Black Day again this year and empower others to help make a difference locally and beyond.

Saturday 26 October

This year we welcomed a record-breaking number of students into the stadium, along with staff, alumni and our esteemed partners.

Guests heard speeches from:

Paul Elliott CBE MBE – CAFC Board Lead on EDI

Marilyn Toft – CACT Chair to the Board of Trustees and Chair of the EDI and Safeguarding sub-committee

Dr Michael Seeraj – CACT Head of EDI

Professor Andrew Westby – University of Greenwich Deputy Vice Chancellor

Each speech discussed how EDI is embedded into the framework of the university, Charlton Athletic and the Community Trust, and touched upon Charlton’s ‘All Different, All Together, All Charlton’ message for Red, White and Black Day.

It was then over to the community parade, which begun at the station and ended at the stadium, bringing together over 500 local school children and members of the public. We were pleased to sponsor the steel band again for this year’s parade.

Across the day, we had two Student Ambassadors supporting us to welcome guests, and we enlisted two Employability Champions to capture ‘Day in the Life’ content and interviews before and after the community parade. Watch the videos on our Instagram and TikTok!

Addicks fan and University of Greenwich student, Harriet Togwell had the unique opportunity to spend most of the day shadowing Charlton Athletic’s media professional, Charlotte Richardson. From learning about camera set up to watching interviews in action, Harriet came away with an even greater understanding and passion for sports commentary. Read about Harriet’s full experience here.

We were also excited to see 3 of our Student Ambassadors (Maitreyi Kulkarni, Purav Agarwal and Syed Taabish Ali) featured in Charlton Athletic’s Red, White and Black Day Promo Video which was shared on social media and replayed on the main screen before the match.

Overall, we had a brilliant day celebrating the importance of Red, White and Black Day and enjoying what ended up being an action-packed match against Wrexham FC!

Sunday 3 November

On Sunday, the celebrations continued with Charlton Athletic Women facing Southampton. Two of our Student Ambassadors came along to welcome spectators, promote the university and encourage prospective students to join us. We also hosted a competition during the match where fans could receive a signed Charlton Athletic Women’s shirt by posting a picture on social media using #RedWhiteBlack.

Despite the match ending with a 1-0 loss, we had a brilliant day continuing our celebrations.
