Greenwich has climbed 15 places from last year from 23rd to eighth in the People & Planet University League

The 2022/23 People & Planet University League, which ranks 153 UK universities against sustainability and ethics criteria, has named the University of Greenwich as the 8th best university in the UK.

Professor Jane Harrington, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Greenwich, said:

“This is a fantastic achievement for the university. To continue to rank so high on this list requires everyone in our community to do their bit and shows that the entire university is committed to tackling the most pressing issues. There is always more work to be done but this encouraging result is reflective of all the hard work of our staff and students.”

Simon Goldsmith, Head of Sustainability at the University of Greenwich said:

“This is a great result and a testament to the contributions our staff and students are doing across our operations and activities. I think there is scope to improve further, but I am proud of many in our organisation who work tirelessly day-to-day to help us become more sustainable.”

In 2022, the People & Planet University League ranked UK universities according to 14 criteria including: Environmental policy, auditing and human resources, and their performance in areas such as carbon reduction, waste and water recycling, student engagement, education for sustainable development, energy sources, sustainable food and workers’ rights. The ranking combines information made public by universities online, with raw data obtained from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) 2020/2021 Estates Management Record (EMR) covering the period 01 August 2020 to 31 July 2021.
