Awarding Differences at the University of Greenwich

Find out more about the awarding data at the University of Greenwich, and how this compares to the sector.

At the University of Greenwich, we measure the BAME awarding difference by calculating the difference in the rates at which we award 1st and 2:1 degrees to different groups of (UK-domiciled, full-time, undergraduate) students. This is the same method used by the Office for Students in monitoring awarding differences as part of a university's Access and Participation Plan.

In the Academic Year 2023-24, the University of Greenwich’s BAME awarding difference was 15%. The sector wide figure was 12.6%.

The graph below shows the awarding difference at the University of Greenwich compared to the rest of the sector since Academic Year 2016-17. There was slow but steady progress between 2016 – 2020, with the difference reducing by 3.1%. In 2019-20 the difference resembled that of the sector, before increasing by 1% in 2020/2021. This illustrates the persistent nature of the difference, and we acknowledge that targeted and ongoing work is required to address this.

We also equip our staff with school, programme and module level data in order to scrutinise provision and inform initiatives at all levels. Programme level data has also now been integrated into our Continuous Improvement Tool (CIT). This is a holistic tool which allows undergraduate Programme Leaders to access all of their programme related data and plan accordingly.
