Research shows that students who actively plan and make informed career decisions are more likely to transition into professional roles after graduation, regardless of subject area. For that reason, it is important that programmes give students structured opportunities to explore choices, reflect on their strengths and values, and understand how these connect to the labour market. At Greenwich we recognise Career Planning as an ongoing process from registration to graduation.
Career readiness registration data
It is likely that all students who arrive at Greenwich will have ideas on the sectors they would like to enter after graduation. We survey students about their career aspirations and career readiness. The survey is embedded at registration or re-registration and revisited annually.
In doing so we are able to assess our students confidence and plans, allowing all staff teams (academic and professional services) to tailor support and resources to meet student needs.
In this survey Students self-assess their career stage through three key questions:
- Work Experience: Students report the types of work or self-employment they’ve undertaken in the past three years, including options such as part-time work, placements, or freelance roles. *
- Industry Interests: Students select up to three industries they are most interested in pursuing after graduation, providing insight into career aspirations.
- Career Readiness: Students assess their current stage of career planning, ranging from having no plans to having a confirmed job or study opportunity.
We believe this information can be used to help shape curricula, allowing us insight into thinking through what our students will need to know, and the skills they will need to attain in order to enter the sectors they are heading towards.
Career Readiness data is available through the Career Registration Report in Business Objects:
Staff Portal > Reporting > Student Administration > Student Reporting > Careers Registration > Report List.
The Careers Registration dashboards allow you to track how confident and prepared students feel about career planning and have been shown to correlate strongly with Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS) results. Programmes where students demonstrate higher readiness scores consistently achieve stronger graduate employment outcomes, while lower scores can act as an early warning indicator. Engaging with this data allows programme leads to spot gaps early, align support with industry needs and student aspirations, and strengthen the evidence base linking curriculum design to graduate success.
