The Institute of Political Economy, Governance, Finance and Accountability (PEGFA) invites you to its Research Seminar Series 2024/25. Our final Research Seminar will take place on 25th March 2025 in QMO68 & Online, featuring PEGFA speakers Dr Cem Oyvat and Dr Mary-Paz Arrieta-Paredes. Dr Oyvat will be speaking on 'Minimum Wages in a High-Inflation Economy: The case of Turkey'. "This paper examines the impact of increases in minimum wage in Turkey on inflation. Turkey has been struggling with high inflation, and minimum wages play a crucial role on determining wages and distribution in this high inflation context. The paper first provides a Post-Keynesian/Post-Kaleckian theoretical framework on the possible impact of wages and conflict inflation. Next, using Structural Vector Autoregression (SVAR) models, the paper empirically examines the impact of minimum wage hikes on inflation, unemployment, and capacity utilization in Turkey, drawing on two distinct inflation measures: the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from TURKSTAT and the Cost-of-Living Index from the İstanbul Chamber of Commerce." Dr Arrieta-Parades' presentation will discuss 'Financing the adoption of green innovations in British SMEs: Is the government’s Net Zero 2050 policy lowering their carbon footprint?'. "This research investigates the adoption of green innovations by British SMEs, examining the influence of the UK government's Net Zero 2050 policy. Utilizing the British Business Bank (BBB) survey data (2021-2023), the study employs simultaneous ordered logistic models to analyze the relationships between ESG factors, access to finance, firmographics, and SMEs' awareness and adoption of green initiatives. Preliminary findings reveal a complex interplay of factors, with access to finance and regional differences playing significant roles. Future work will incorporate linguistic analysis to understand the evolving policy discourse around Net Zero." The MS Teams meeting can be accessed here. We look forward to seeing you there!
