The world's leading psychology organisation has named a University of Greenwich scientist as its first female president.

In the year of celebration of woman's suffrage, Professor Pam Maras, Director of Research & Enterprise at Greenwich, has taken up her new role as President of the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPSyS), the global body for psychology

Speaking from a meeting of the International Science Council in Paris, Professor Maras said: "My research with experts in many parts of the world has shown me how psychology can positively impact on social, educational and economic developments and policy.

"I am honoured and delighted that the union has put its trust in me to ensure that the foundations already laid by successive assemblies are built upon. I am committed to representation, both within our organisational structures and our external activity, in particular in regional development support for psychology for public good"

The union was founded in Paris in 1889 and is the global international organisation for psychology, representing world psychology on many bodies including the United Nations, World Health Authority and International Council for Science. Its general assembly comprises representatives of senior leadership from associations around the world who vote for leadership.

A former president of the British Psychological Society, Professor Maras' duties as president began when she was elected president-elect in 2016. She has been working closely with past presidents in leadership and strategic development, in particular leading the unions capacity building and support for regional development including in Africa, Tyas Arab Union, The Asia Pacific Region, the Caribbean and Latin America,
