Key details

Ms Ann V Dean

Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) Mentor & Assistive Technology Trainer Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)

Ann returned to education as a mature student to fulfil her lifelong ambition of completing a degree. Prior to this endeavour, she worked as a Contracts Officer for local government in the Finance Directorate, where she was employed for 25 years, as a Housing and Council Benefits and Contracts Officer.

Ann wished to change career and direction (due to family and personal circumstances), and started her epic journey in education. Hence, she now has her BA Hons 1st class in Business with Human Resources Management completed at Greenwich University. Continuing on to train as a teacher obtaining her Prof GCE (Numeracy) and Qualified Teacher Training and Skills (QTLS), via Canterbury Christ Church University and the Society of Education and Skills. She chose the specialism of numeracy for adult education and functional skills because there was a shortage of maths teachers. Whilst she studied she continued to work for the local authority and as a supply teacher.

Ann has now taught in Further and Higher Education colleges, Adult Education, on apprenticeship schemes and Adult Education Budget contracts, as a functional skills maths and English tutor. During her time teaching she became a member of the Society of Education and Training and thus, completed her QTLS, for her continued professional development, obtaining the Member of the society of Education and Employment (MSET)
Furthermore, |Ann felt the need to continue her studies, because she had something further to offer and contribute to education. Hence, she started the full-time master's course in education. She completed with a distinction in Education in Technology with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) students. This resulted in her application as a supporter member to the Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties (PATOSS).

Ann is now a Mentor and tutor for the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) in Higher Education sector at University, delivering mentoring to Autism Spectrum Condition students (having completed the National Autistic Societies Ask Autism Modules) and those allocated Educational Technology for Dyslexia and other needs.
Furthermore, following on from the MA Ed Tech, her proposal and ethics for the Educational Doctorate have been accepted and she has now start her final education and research journey in Education with a specialism of Autism and study skills.

Research / Scholarly interests

Ann's field of study, in education, is retention and achievement of neurodiverse students at university, particularly Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) students. This is achieved, by carrying out an assessment to capture current study skills, work and life balance to optimise the students' ways of working.

Ann has considered this area of study because mental health issues have increased significantly in university and in general, due to stressors placed on students to perform well. These stressors arise due to the competitive nature of study, life and employment. This is in general and more specifically for students with ASC.
This study may also, apply to the wider society and assessment of the skills for the work place of the potential employee when applying for a new position.
