Dr Emy Lucassen PhD, PGCert

Dr Emy Lucassen graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1985 and subsequently completed a PhD in Cancer Research (HER2 in breast cancer) at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in Berne. She also has an MA in Medical Law and Ethics from King’s College London, a PGCert in Higher Education from the University of Greenwich, and a PGCert in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary University of London.

After a post-doctoral fellowship at the Institute of Virology and Environmental Biology in Oxford, she was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry at Thames Polytechnic in 1991 and was working there when it became the University of Greenwich. She then moved into industry, joining AstraZeneca, where she enjoyed a varied career including work in oncology, genomics, intellectual property, and an extensive secondment to help set up The Brightside Trust, a charity established to inspire schoolchildren from low-income backgrounds to engage with science.

She returned to the University of Greenwich, this time as Student Success Associate for Biomed Online, where she leads two Master’s programmes, tutors Healthcare Law and Ethics, and supervises project students.

Research / Scholarly interests

Emy's research interests are wide-ranging.  She has published in peer-reviewed journals on cancer research, the impact of pregnancy on long-term weight gain, changes in hormone levels during strenuous sport, prenatal genetic testing, the disclosure of genetic information within families, and on the use of online learning materials.
