Key details
Dr Iain Goodall
Senior Scientific Officer, Analytical Instrumentation and Research Team
Dr Iain Goodall is a Senior Scientific Officer and Laboratory Manager for the Organic Mass Spectrometry laboratory at the University of Greenwich. His career pathway reflects a multidisciplinary background, beginning with studies in Theoretical Physics before transitioning into Chemistry and environmental science. Growing up on a nature reserve in Lincolnshire fostered an early interest in ecology and fieldwork, which later shaped his academic direction. After completing a PhD in Earth System Sciences at the University of Leicester, he joined the University of Greenwich in 2015, where he has since played a key role in advancing analytical and environmental research.
Responsibilities within the university
Iain supports a wide range of teaching and research activities across the Faculty of Engineering and Science. His responsibilities include managing the Organic Mass Spectrometry laboratory, supporting undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervising student research projects and contributing to PhD training. He also plays an active role in developing analytical capabilities, supporting collaborative research, and engaging with external partners through consultancy and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. In addition, he contributes to outreach initiatives that connect the university with schools, community groups and regional stakeholders.
Research interests
His research focuses on environmental monitoring and analytical chemistry, with particular emphasis on water quality and pollutant detection. He leads work on the Stour Monitoring Programme (StoMP), investigating contaminants such as pharmaceuticals, nutrients, microplastics and emerging pollutants in chalk river systems. His interests lie in understanding pollutant sources, transport and environmental impact, as well as improving the use of citizen science data in regulatory and policy contexts.
Areas of expertise
Iain specialises in advanced analytical techniques, particularly mass spectrometry for the detection and quantification of environmental pollutants. His expertise includes targeted and untargeted chemical analysis, water quality assessment, and the integration of laboratory and field-based monitoring approaches. He also has experience in interdisciplinary collaboration, environmental data validation, and supporting community-led monitoring initiatives that contribute to broader environmental management and decision-making.
