Professor Joshua Boateng obtained his Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Ghana) in February 1999 (First Class Honours) and then pursued an MSc in Pharmaceutical Analysis programme at the University of Strathclyde under a DFID Commonwealth Scholarship, graduating in November 2000. He subsequently undertook PhD research in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Drug Delivery and Formulation) under a Pfizer-sponsored project at the University of Strathclyde, from 2001-05. Subsequently, he took up a postdoctoral position at the Nottingham Trent University as part of a WADA-sponsored consortium on investigating surrogate biomarkers for detecting gene doping in sports, using mass spectrometry based proteomic approaches (2005-07).

Professor Joshua Boateng still maintains active research interests in all the above areas and published extensively as well as presented at several conferences around the above themes. He joined the School of Science at the University of Greenwich in August 2007 and is currently a Professor in Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery.

Professor Boateng belongs to the pharmaceutical science research cluster within the School of Science. He works in an interdisciplinary range of research areas covering pharmaceutics (formulation and drug delivery), pharmaceutical analysis and proteomics as outlined below:

Wound Healing

  • Medicated dressings targeting pain and infection in chronic wounds
  • Natural products (e.g. honey, plant extracts) based dressings for treating wounds and dermatological conditions
  • Delivery of proteins and growth factors to chronic wound sites
  • 3D printing/bioprinting of cell laden scaffolds for tissue regeneration and wound healing

Mucosal Drug Delivery

  • Buccal delivery of large and small molecules to improve compliance in paediatric and geriatric patients
  • Vaginal and ocular drug delivery systems including 3D printed lenses

Nanotechnology

  • Mucosal vaccination using mucoadhesive nanoparticles
  • The use of nanocarriers in optimising cellular output of complement regulators in hereditary angioedema.
