Dr Osama Maklad BSc, PhD, AFHEA, CEng MIMechE

Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering

Dr Maklad joined the Faculty of Engineering and Science as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in February 2022. Previously, he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate for two years at the Transient Flow Laboratory (TFL) at Liverpool John Moores University conducting research on turbulent pulsatile flows using direct numerical simulations (DNS).

Dr Maklad obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2019 from the University of Liverpool within the Biomechanical Engineering Group studying the influence of fluid-structure interaction on human eye biomechanics. After his PhD, Osama worked as a research associate at the University of Liverpool Fluids Engineering Research Group on Rheological characterisation of functionalised dipeptides, yield stress and viscoelastic fluids.

Osama obtained his Bachelor of Science (BSc) with honour in Mechanical Power Engineering from Mansoura University, Egypt in 2013 after which he was appointed as assistant lecturer at the same department. He is the author/co-author of 7 scientific peer reviewed journal papers in high impact journals, 2 conference papers and a book chapter is currently under review.

Responsibilities within the university

Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering conducting high quality research and teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the area of Mechanical Engineering in a variety of formats as well as research and enterprise activities.

My current research interests include:

  • Studying turbulence characteristics of pulsatile flows and its role in understanding blood flow dynamics in large arteries.
  • Rheological characterisation of viscoelastic and complex fluids
  • Biomechanics of the human body that involve fluid dynamics, especially ocular biomechanics
