Dr Samer El-Daher

Principal Lecturer in Biochemistry; University of Greenwich Teaching Fellow; Learning Enhancement Co-ordinator

Dr El-Daher Samer finished his undergraduate studies in 1981 at the University of Sana’a, The Yemen, where he obtained a joint honours BSc degree – major biochemistry/minor chemistry. After working as a biomedical scientist and heading a number of clinical biochemistry departments in the Ministry of Health, he came to the UK and started a PhD at the biochemistry department of King’s College London, studying Lysosomal Storage Disorders (LSDs) under the supervision of Professor Brian G. Winchester.

In 1992 he submitted a thesis entitled ‘The Substrate Specificity of Lysosomal a-Mannosidase’ and obtained his PhD. He then briefly worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute of Child Health, Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.

In 1993 he joined the Thrombosis Research Institute, London, where he worked as a senior research post-doctoral fellow investigating the mechanisms of activation of platelets by inositol phosphates.

In 2000 he joined the University of Greenwich where he became a Senior Lecturer, Biochemistry, and in 2007 he was appointed as the School of Science Learning Enhancement Co-ordinator, responsible for identifying and disseminating good practice leading to the enhancement of the student learning experience.

In June 2009 Samer was promoted to a University of Greenwich Teaching Fellow.
