Here we share how to support your students to use AI with academic integrity, and how you can use it to support your teaching practice
We encourage the use of AI by students
The university has set out its position on the use of AI by students. We encourage its use as a learning tool and want to ensure that students are aware of how to use it safely and with academic integrity. We therefore encourage you to direct your students to the guidance and ensure that you are familiar with it.
Assessment guidelines must clearly state the AI category
Where AI has contributed to an assessment, students are expected to include an AI Reflection (AIR) explaining how AI was used, how outputs were reviewed or revised and what their own contribution was.
Staff are responsible for determining the most appropriate tier for each assessment:
Tier 1 - Independent of AI: AI is restricted because the assessment is designed to demonstrate individual knowledge, live performance, practical skill or professional judgement. Approved accessibility tools may still be used where appropriate.
Tier 2 - Supported by AI: AI may support learning, planning, feedback, grammar, clarification or refinement. However, you remain responsible for the argument, evidence, analysis, interpretation and final work.
Tier 3 - Augmented with AI: AI is an intentional part of the assessment. You may use generative tools to create, test, develop or refine ideas, code, designs, simulations or other outputs. You will be assessed on how critically and responsibly you direct, check, select, revise and explain AI-supported work.

Support for using AI effectively
Further support and guidance is available for teaching staff in the Learning and Teaching Resource centre. The Technology Enhanced Learning team deliver AI training to academic staff as part of the team’s CPD programme.
