After over a month of donations which included the IPL Giving Weekend as part of Wrongful Conviction Day, the campaign raised £5,663.
The Innocence Project London (IPL) is a charitable organisation that works to raise awareness of wrongful convictions and provide access to justice for convicted people maintaining their innocence.
In the UK and across the world, people are being wrongfully convicted for crimes they did not commit. The criminal justice system is slow, outdated and underfunded, meaning innocent individuals in prison cannot access the help they need to make their voices heard.
The IPL is a law clinic based at the University of Greenwich, and as a charity they have to fundraise to sustain their ability to provide justice to clients and educate the next generations of legal professionals. Through the IPL, law and criminology students work in small groups alongside a practising lawyer, to review and investigate claims of innocence from convicted individuals who have exhausted the criminal appeals process.
The campaign started as part of Wrongful Conviction Day 2023, a day where the world acknowledges the travesty of wrongful convictions and miscarriages of justice.
The IPL is run by Director, Dr Louise Hewitt, who was hugely grateful to those who donated and shared the campaign.
“Thank you to everyone who made donations to the Innocence Project London Giving Weekend. Your donations, however big or small, really means a lot to this charity and our work to provide access to justice. Your support is appreciated, not just by me but also by the students who volunteer for the organisation.
As a charity, we are reliant on donations to help our day-to-day work. Your donations will enable the students to support their clients and the IPL as an organisation to instruct experts on behalf of our clients should that be necessary.
Crowdfunding is an excellent platform for us to use and I cannot thank the University of Greenwich Alumni and Fundraising team enough for all their help and support. This annual campaign not only helps fund our work, but it also helps to create awareness of what we do, reaching potential clients so they know how to contact us.”
About the Innocence Project London
The IPL brings together lawyers working pro bono and students from law and criminology to investigate claims of innocence from those who have exhausted all their options and have nowhere else to turn.
The IPL raises awareness about the staggering number of individuals unjustly imprisoned and the urgent need for justice system reforms.
During the Giving Weekend, the IPL joined organisations across the world in raising funds and awareness which are crucial in sustaining efforts to provide justice and education.
Funds raised will directly contribute to vital services which support many forgotten individuals in the pursuit of freedom. It will also educate the next generations of legal professionals studying at the university.
