“My Course Gave Me Confidence, an Amazing Career and Made Me Feel Part of Something That is Special!”

Liz Ware studied the BSc Midwifery course with us in 2009 and has since returned to complete the MSc Advanced Practice programme in Healthcare Practice.

"I chose the University of Greenwich because it scored highly for healthcare courses and it was local to where I live, including the placement areas being local." Liz told us. "I initially carried out the BSc Midwifery in 2009 and have since then carried out several post graduate courses. Most recently in 2017-2020, I completed the MSc Advanced Practice programme in Healthcare Practice."

When asked about her experience at Greenwich, Liz said "My experience with the university has always been positive. There are always times when you feel a little lost, with workload, work life balance and managing priorities with supporting a family/academic work/placement but I felt supported during this time by the university."
Liz's current position is Specialist Bereavement Midwife, Band 7 at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich.

Liz told us that she undertook the MSc Advanced Practice course for personal satisfaction reasons, and to provide her with other opportunities within the trust that this qualification afforded.

When asked about the lecturers at the university, Liz explained "They were professional, friendly and approachable." Liz also told us that whilst she carried out placements for the BSc programme, which were in all areas appropriate to midwifery, there were no placements for the MSc programme. However, she continued to work within her clinical role during the whole of the three-year course.

We asked Liz about the social side of the course, she told us "The course was varied, the BSc attracted all age groups and I made good friendship links. The MSc programme was mainly clinical staff that had worked in their trusts for a considerable amount of time, each from different healthcare backgrounds."

To conclude, we asked Liz if she would recommend the courses that she had studied at the university. Liz enthusiastically responded "Yes! Of course! Both the BSc and MSc programmes will give you confidence, give you an amazing career and make you feel part of something that is special!"

We thank Liz for sharing her story with us and wish her the best for the future!
