Student spotlight

Navdeep Dhanoya

Navdeep is a third year BSc Hons Public Health student here at Greenwich.

Public Health

“I did my 40 hours of work experience at an NGO called Action for Community Development, which is in Deptford, south London. My role within this organisation was as a health promotion officer and I was responsible for implementing various health promotion interventions designed to improve the health and wellbeing of Black African and Caribbean communities living in Lewisham.

After completing my 40 hours, I decided to stay with the organisation to develop my skills and experience further. My experience has been a challenging one but also extremely rewarding as I have been commissioned to work with the Lewisham public health commissioning team. We are in the process of developing a community champions programme which will help tackle health inequalities faced by the Black African and Caribbean community.

The previous knowledge and skills from the degree programme have been pivotal to my role as a health promotion officer and without it, I would not be able to be in the position that I am in now.

This opportunity is an excellent steppingstone for someone like me who would like to pursue a career within the area of health promotion, and I am grateful to be able to have such an exciting and engaging work placement.”

Our events

Our third annual Public Health & Social Care Virtual Career Gala took place on the 13 March 2023. It featured presentations from speakers about graduate schemes and internships, the UK Public Health Register, private sector careers in publishing and the Greenwich Alumni Network. It also included panel discussions featuring graduates from our Greenwich Public Health Portfolio who are currently working in organisations such as the non-profit Support and Advice on Sexual Health (SASH) London, the National Health Service (NHS), the London Borough of Hounslow and Johns Hopkins University, among others.

Our research projects

Dr Kafui Adjaye-Gbewonyo is leading a research project called ExPoSE which stands for ‘Explaining population trends in cardiovascular risk: a comparative analysis of health transitions in South Africa and England’. The project is a secondary data analysis which uses data from multiple national population surveys conducted in South Africa and England between 1998 and 2017. It uses these data to estimate trends in cardiovascular disease risk in both countries over time and to examine the different factors that might explain these trends. This project demonstrates how existing data from surveys and other sources can be used to better understand population health.

Kafui is also involved in a collaborative research study called Contextual Awareness Response and Evaluation (CARE): Diabetes in Ghana. This project is collecting primary qualitative and quantitative data to study the context of diabetes in an urban poor community in Accra, Ghana. The project shows how interdisciplinary mixed-methods research partnerships can help to improve our understanding of health in disadvantaged communities.

Dr Amal Elamin

Amal’s research primarily focuses on oral diseases and their associated determinants in high-risk populations. She is currently working on a project titled “Projecting the burden of dental caries and periodontal diseases among the adult population in the UK using a multi-state population model”

Dr Muhammad Osman

Muhammad is leading global work on the IMPAC19TB project, a multilateral international collaborative project to evaluate the epidemiological impact and intersection of the COVID-19 and tuberculosis pandemics in Brazil, Russia, India, and South Africa. In April 2023, Muhammad presented findings and facilitated discussions at a dissemination meeting in South Africa.
