The Faculty of Engineering and Science is now a complete hub for all STEM subjects

TLDRoffon

Construction programmes and the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences will join the Faculty of Engineering and Science in a move that will enhance teaching, learning and research in STEM subjects at the University of Greenwich.

Centralising STEM: A cause to celebrate

September 2022 will see courses that previously were housed within the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences become part of the Faculty of Engineering and Science. The Faculty will welcome the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences and programmes in Construction. These courses will continue to be taught on the Greenwich Campus. Construction programmes will join the structure of the School of Engineering specifically, complementing teaching taking place in disciplines such as Civil Engineering.

This merger is a university-wide cause to celebrate. With the inclusion of courses in Computing, Computer Science, Games Design, Data Science and Mathematics, the Faculty of Engineering and Science will be a hub for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and will be a contender to be the largest faculty at the University of Greenwich. The university has no doubt that the Faculty’s expansion will be a huge boost to STEM teaching, learning and research across the board as a result of this centralised and more collaborative approach to these subjects.

The merger demonstrates the university’s commitment to the impactful delivery of STEM programmes, as well as its commitment to creating successful students who will go on to become experienced and forward-thinking scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians.

A Faculty across two fantastic campuses

The Faculty of Engineering and Science will now be split across two campuses – the Medway Campus in Chatham Maritime, Kent, and the Greenwich Campus in Greenwich, London. There will be a Faculty Office and support teams based at both campuses.

Both campuses boast unique features and great facilities, which include the 8,000m2 worth of purpose-built lab space on the Medway Campus, and the Graphics Processing Unit lab, hardware lab and comms lab on the Greenwich Campus. Medway, located in the heart of the South East industrial belt, has strong links with local industries, increasing career opportunities, and is a great place to make lasting memories. The Greenwich Campus, meanwhile, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated close to central London, which is consistently ranked as the best place to study in the world (QS Top Universities, Best Student Cities, 2022). Excellent transport infrastructures mean students can make the most of thriving city life as well as explore the Great British Coast and beyond.

Collaborative working for new opportunities

The Faculty is pleased to be expanding in this positive way, with the new links to Greenwich Campus meaning more opportunities and benefits for students. Members of staff, particularly our early career researchers and other research staff, have welcomed their new Faculty colleagues and the opportunities that have opened up for new and exciting collaborations to enhance existing and future projects.
