Reminder: The appraisal round for 2020 is closing on 30 November

TLDRoffon

Appraisal remains important and a supportive activity during a period of uncertainty, providing structure for establishing priorities, setting constructive goals and 1-1s.

We recognise that this year has very different, and therefore we extended the deadline for appraisals to 30 November. Staff who are submitted to the REF were asked to complete their appraisal by the original deadline. If you have any questions about the deadline please contact Laleh Williams.

We are proud of the contributions you have made to enable our move to virtual campuses, and to enable our blended learning environment and we encourage you to record your part in this in your appraisal.

Staff and appraisers should /must recognise that not all appraisal objectives or deliverables may be achievable and therefore may need to be amended or deferred as appropriate. Conversely, where staff have taken on additional work to support the delivery of our virtual campus and/or operating virtually this should also be recognised. Both of these can be captured on the appraisal form under additional objectives or in the comments section.

Ratings should reflect the current context. Therefore, if there has not been the opportunity to complete all objectives then a rating should be applied using the best available information and assessed against the need to have delivered on other higher or immediate priorities. Where there are extenuating circumstances preventing the completion of objectives these should be disregarded.

Where new objectives are set for 2020-21, these will need to be delivered by remote working while the university is operating as a virtual campus. When we begin to resume campus based working, we recommend appraisal objectives are reviewed to ensure they remain appropriate.

The provision of new academic performance metrics and their enhancements, will be deferred until 2021 and will be updated with wider appraisal system improvements.

You can find more about our appraisal process and the guides available on the HR web pages.

Select an appraiserWithin the appraisal system you can select your appraiser (see image). Appraisers should already be populated, but if not, you can find and select from the default appraiser search. If you select a new appraiser, please contact them so they know to approve the request.

Wellbeing

We encourage the use of 1-1s and appraisals as an opportunity to support individual wellbeing. For ideas and guidance, see the information here.
