Recording: Life Transitions and Wellbeing, Professor Derek Moore

TLDRoffon

The talk explores how our wellbeing is affected by large and small transitions. which could be starting university, a new job, as well as everyday hassles, which could be adjusting to new software; it also outlines the university’s wellbeing strategy.

The talk covers many aspects of wellbeing and mental health, focussing on how wellbeing isn't just happiness or positive emotions, but also includes for example self-acceptance, personal growth and positive relationships with others.

Transitions all come with stress, they all need adjustment and they all come with challenges.

Everyday hassles can also impact on our wellbeing. Hassles are personal but can include financial worries, computer troubles, travel problems or noisy neighbours. Whilst minor on their own, they can build up and lead to stress.

You can counter hassles with uplifts: things like giving a gift, seeing friends, listening to music or spending time with your family. It's important to spend time on your wellbeing and ensure your hassles don't outweigh your uplifts too much of the time.

The talk, which was originally given at the University Mental Health and Wellbeing Day in March and has since been repeated and recorded, explores causes and solutions to stress and wellbeing worries, on both a personal and institutional level. Part of the institutional response is our new University Wellbeing strategy, a holistic way of ensuring both staff and students have access to the tools to ensure their mental and physical wellbeing.

Tolerance, positivity, being informed and being honest, these are all things we want to achieve as part of our Wellbeing strategy.

Our Wellbeing hub also offers support and guidance.  Additionally the Big White Wall provides an anonymous space for students going through a difficult time, while our Employee Assistance Programme is available for staff.
