Senior Lecturer, Children's Nursing

Claire Sevenoaks is currently working as a Senior Lecturer for Children's Nursing in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Greenwich.

Claire is a registered sick children's nurse (RSCN) after qualifying as a general nurse (RGN) in 1985 and is now on three parts of the Nursing and Midwifery Council register. She has a Diploma in Child Development and a PGDip Advanced Practice and in Childhood Practice.

She has worked with children and young people over the last three decades gaining expertise in the field of paediatric oncology/haematology as senior staff nurse to clinical nurse specialist, serving children and young people across London and working closely with staff to improve outcomes for children and young people experiencing acute or ongoing hospital admissions.

Her experience of working practice has a strong focus on education. As lecturer at City University she supported students in practice and was a clinical educator of high-fidelity simulation practice as specialist in the haematology, bone marrow transplantation and infectious disease unit for an NHS trust.

In 2014, Claire joined the university as a senior lecturer, her interest focusing on nursing care for child and young people with chronic long term conditions, genetic conditions, pain and the symptom care of childhood cancer.
She lectures on pre-registration BSc Children's Nursing as well as for post-registration health professionals on other specialist pathways, such as delivering paediatric intravenous care packages, advanced physical assessment skills of children for non-medical practitioners, as well as chemotherapy training.

Claire is also a Link tutor with a range of NHS, private and charity sector providers providing clinical placements to enhance the student experience.

Research / Scholarly interests

Claire's research interests include: medication error, intravenous therapies, staff and patient experience, and children and young people with cancer/haemoglobinopathy disorders. She also explores genetic conditions and teaching and learning competencies in the clinical area.
