Dr Barmak Honarvar Shakibaei Asli
Senior Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Dr Barmak Honarvar Shakibaei Asli is a Senior Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Greenwich (London and South East University Group). He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering (Digital Signal and Image Processing) from the University of Malaya, Malaysia (2013).
With over 28 years of experience in higher education and research, Dr Honarvar has held academic positions at Cranfield University (UK), the Institute of Information Theory and Automation (Czech Academy of Sciences), the University of Malaya (Malaysia), and Azad University of Urmia (Iran).
His research focuses on artificial intelligence, digital signal and image processing, medical imaging, computer vision, and industrial automation. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers, with more than 840 citations and an h-index of 15.
Dr Honarvar has secured and managed significant research funding as Principal Investigator and Project Manager, including grants from UKRI, EPSRC (£1.3M), the Czech Science Foundation (GAČR, €65k), and dstl/ASTRID (£8k). He is a Senior Member of IEEE, Senior Member of OPTICA, and an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).
Responsibilities within the university
- Module Leader for undergraduate modules: Digital Electronic Systems (L5), Embedded Electronics and Communications (L7), Multiple Technology Projects (L5) and Design of Advanced Electronic Systems (L7)
- Supervision of PhD researchers and MSc dissertation students in areas of AI, signal processing, computer vision, and medical imaging
- Teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students across Electrical and Electronic Engineering
- Curriculum development and laboratory-based teaching in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, including PLC and industrial automation systems
- Research and scholarly activity in artificial intelligence, digital signal and image processing, and medical diagnostics
- Student pastoral care and academic tutoring
- Research grant development and income generation
- Contribution to the School of Engineering research profile and REF submission

Research / Scholarly interests
Dr Honarvar's research interests lie at the intersection of artificial intelligence, digital signal and image processing, and medical diagnostics. His work focuses on developing novel computational methods for signal and image analysis, with applications in medical imaging (breast cancer detection, ultrasound imaging, brain tumour detection), industrial condition monitoring, and autonomous systems.
He has made significant contributions to the theory and application of orthogonal moments, moment invariants, and filter-based signal processing algorithms. His recent work includes deep learning approaches for medical image analysis, small target detection, and AI-driven diagnostics.
Dr Honarvar is actively involved in interdisciplinary research collaborations across healthcare, engineering, and industrial systems. He has supervised PhD students in AI, medical imaging, structural health monitoring, and signal processing. His research is supported by grants from UKRI, EPSRC, GAČR, and dstl/ASTRID.
He is committed to research-informed teaching, integrating his research findings into postgraduate and undergraduate curricula to enhance student learning and engagement.
