Key details

Ms Mary Mullen

Lecturer in TV Studio Production (Image Production) | Academic Specialist in Television Production

Mary Mullen is an academic-practitioner, television producer/director, experimental film artist and specialist educator with over 30 years’ experience in education, including higher education teaching since 2005. Her practice spans television, radio, experimental film, photography, performance and socially engaged arts. Drawing on an early career in nursing and movement, her approach connects care, embodied learning and creative agency.

Mary produced professional and educational media through BDP Media and independent practice, including projects for UNICEF. Her internationally circulated artists’ films and participatory work with SHAPE London, Women’s Aid and prison radio explore expression, authorship and inclusion.

At the University of Greenwich, Mary leads core television production modules and develops university–industry collaboration, connecting students, alumni, communities and broadcasters. She has helped establish the UK Local TV partnership, embedding broadcaster briefs, editorial feedback, quality control and public transmission within undergraduate learning, enabling students to gain professional broadcast credits and develop their creative practice.

Mary created TV PEOPLE MAKE (TVPM) and is developing the Industry-Meets-Education Model (IMEM) through doctoral research in Film and Screen Practices. Her research investigates how collaborative broadcast production supports inclusive participation, storytelling agency, belonging and professional identity, while developing a transferable framework for sustained collaboration between universities, communities and television broadcasters.

Responsibilities within the university

Mary Mullen’s responsibilities encompass television studio and screen-production teaching, curriculum and production development, industry-engaged learning, broadcast-facing co-production, pedagogical research and Practice-as-Research, knowledge exchange, and doctoral research in Film and Screen Practices.

From 2021–2024, Mary undertook a faculty-aligned Employability Lead role, working proactively with the Deputy Head of School and careers and employability professional services across the University to develop and coordinate meaningful placements and industry opportunities for students. This included two years of media placement opportunities with KMTV.

Mary was also UoG Screen Curator for the New Lights Festival (2022–23 and 2024–25), supporting the University of Greenwich collaboration with Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and creative partnerships across film and music.

She is the founder and lead broker of the University of Greenwich–UK Local TV partnership and accompanying Memorandum of Understanding, endorsed by the Pro Vice-Chancellor, developing opportunities that connect degree-level learning with professional television practice. A core focus of Mary’s work is creating pathways for students to make work for broadcast and achieve transmission credits alongside their degree, building tangible professional experience and a record of transmitted work. In 2026, The London Edit enabled 32 students to gain broadcast credits, while Miss Caribbean UK provided a further 14 undergraduate students with broadcast experience.

This industry-engaged work also includes BBC One’s The One Show, whose University placement activity Mary currently supports, alongside the development of TV PEOPLE MAKE (TVPM) and the Industry-Meets-Education Model (IMEM). Mary is extending this work into digital-first television and developing further partnership opportunities that support and promote emerging talent.

She develops collaborative projects that turn curriculum activity into broadcast and public-facing outputs while bringing creative-industry expertise directly into teaching. During the pandemic, this included the GSU Radio podcast project, enabling students to create and broadcast wellbeing podcasts for Mental Health Week. Other initiatives have brought industry professionals and alumni into the curriculum, including Michael Kelpie, Executive Producer of The Chase, providing feedback on student pitches, and Formula 1 Broadcast Director and University of Greenwich alumnus Philip Rorke, participating in a studio interview alongside Michael Kelpie.

Mary’s current television co-production research projects include Mauro, a London Photographer, a half-hour television documentary, and Steel Warriors, a half-hour documentary centred on a knife-crime campaign. These projects bring together alumni, undergraduate and postgraduate students, industry practitioners and academic production and are currently at rough-cut stage. Mary is working with the editing teams to bring this co-production and broadcast-development research through to completion.

Mary’s role also involves ongoing collaboration with academic colleagues and professional services, including Health and Safety and Student Success, integrating their expertise into students’ academic and production journeys. This collaborative approach connects students’ degree experience with professional development and progression into television, media and the wider creative industries.

Research / Scholarly interests

My research and scholarly practice sits at the intersection of television production, creative practice, production pedagogy and industry collaboration. I am particularly interested in the interface between education and professional practice as a space in which stories are created and professional identities, relationships and opportunities are negotiated through collaborative making. My doctoral project, TV PEOPLE MAKE (TVPM), develops and evaluates the Industry-Meets-Education Model (IMEM) for curriculum-embedded, industry-facing television production. It examines collaborative storytelling, authorship, representation, equitable participation, professional development and public value, alongside how knowledge and practice move between students, educators, broadcasters and communities. A particular focus is broadcast transmission as meaningful professional opportunity for entry-level practitioners.

In 2026 to date, my projects have generated 46 student broadcast credits, enabling students to begin developing tangible records of transmitted work alongside their studies. My wider interests encompass Practice-as-Research, pedagogical research, production pedagogy, co-production, creative labour and professional identity, civic storytelling, knowledge exchange, creative entrepreneurship, inclusive talent development and sustainable models of industry-engaged screen education.
